Envoy to Yamamah
The Prophet ﷺ sent his letters to the kings of the earth: “Abdullah ibn Hudhafa to Kisra… Salit ibn Amr was sent to Hawdha ibn Ali the chief of Yamamah, and al-Ala ibn al-Hadrami was sent to Mundhir ibn Sawa the chief of Hajar.” 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 157 — Kandhlawi — Salit among the Prophet's ﷺ envoys to the kings.
’Decaying Bones Have Made You a Leader’
Salit reached Damascus, then went to the court of Hawdha. Salit relates: “Hawdha read the blessed letter and entertained me with royal honour and high esteem. I addressed Hawdha saying: ‘O Hawdha! Decaying and putrefying bones have appointed you as a leader. In reality, a leader is he who is adorned with Iman and secures a provision of Taqwa…’”
Hawdha replied: “What you are calling to is so magnificent and brilliant. The Arabs are awed over my status and authority. So allow me some authority and I will submit before you.” On hearing the reply the Prophet ﷺ said: “By Allah! Even if he has to request for a single span of land I will refuse. He and his country both are destroyed.” 2 Seerat-e-Mustafa · Vol 1 · pp. 434 — Idris Kandhlawi — Salit's mission to Hawdha and the Prophet's ﷺ verdict.
