The Mother of Asma
“Abu Bakr’s first wife was Qutayla bint Abd al-Uzza, who gave birth to Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr followed by Asma bint Abu Bakr, the mother of Abdullah ibn Zubayr… When Abu Bakr was converted to Islam his first wife refused to follow suit and was immediately divorced.” 1 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 316 — Najeebabadi — Qutayla's refusal of Islam and Abu Bakr's divorce.
The Verse of al-Mumtahina
Abdullah ibn Zubayr narrated: “Qutayla bint Abd al-Uzza ibn Abd Sa’d from the Banu Malik ibn Hisl tribe was still a polytheist when she brought some gifts to her daughter Asma the daughter of Abu Bakr. The gifts included a type of badger (which the Arabs ate), some bread and some butter. However, because her mother was not a Muslim, Asma refused to accept the gifts and even refused to allow her mother into her house. When Aisha asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about this, Allah revealed the verse (Surah al-Mumtahina 60:8). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then instructed Asma to accept her mother’s gift and to allow her into her home.” 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 2 · pp. 283 — Kandhlawi — Qutayla's visit to Asma and the revelation of Surah al-Mumtahina v.8.
