The Lesson of Justice
It was over the boy Nu’man that the Prophet ﷺ taught an enduring rule. His father wished to single him out with a gift, and brought the Prophet ﷺ to witness it; but the Prophet ﷺ asked whether he had given the same to all his children, and when told he had not, refused to witness an unequal gift:
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَاعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ أَوْلاَدِكُمْ
”Fear Allah, and be just (equal) among your children.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2587 · Book 51 (Gifts), Hadith 21 · USC-MSA: Vol. 3, Book 47, Hadith 760 · narrated by al-Nu’man ibn Bashir
Nu’man lived on into the Umayyad period and died at Hims.
