Turned Back for His Youth
Al-Bara ibn Azib was an Ansari of the Aws. Eager as a boy to fight, he came out for Badr and again for Uhud, but the Prophet ﷺ sent him back both times on account of his youth, as he did Abdullah ibn Umar. 1 Stories of the Sahabah · pp. 278 — Zakariyya Kandhlawi — al-Bara and Ibn Umar turned back from Badr and Uhud for their youth.
Witness of the Prophet’s ﷺ Courage
He fought in the later campaigns and became a narrator of what he saw. Asked whether the Muslims had deserted the Prophet ﷺ at Hunayn, al-Bara denied it firmly: the Prophet ﷺ did not flee but held his ground on his white mule, declaring, “I am the Prophet, this is no lie; I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib,” calling on Allah’s help. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 2 · pp. 621 — Kandhlawi — al-Bara testifies that the Prophet did not flee at Hunayn but stood firm on his mule. He settled in Kufa, narrating much of the Prophet’s ﷺ life, and died there.
