Testing the Torah Signs
Zayd ibn Su’na was a learned rabbi of the Children of Israel. He had bought dates on credit from the Prophet ﷺ; before the loan was due, he came up and yanked the Prophet’s ﷺ collar, saying: “You Banu Abd al-Muttalib are always late in paying.”
Umar drew his sword. The Prophet ﷺ rebuked him: “O Umar, he and I were both in greater need of something else: that you order me to pay him in full, and order him to ask courteously.” The Prophet ﷺ paid the debt with an extra increment, and Zayd then said: “All the signs of the awaited Prophet in the Torah I have already seen in him — except two: that his forbearance precedes his anger, and that the more harshly someone deals with him the more forbearing he becomes. Today I have seen both.” And he embraced Islam. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 167–169 — Kandhlawi — Zayd ibn Su'na tests the Prophet ﷺ on the Torah signs; the Prophet's ﷺ rebuke of Umar; Zayd's conversion.
