Governor of Jazira and Kufa
al-Walid ibn Uqba was the uterine half-brother of Uthman ibn Affan. Under Umar he governed Jazira and dealt with the Iyad tribe who had crossed into Byzantine territory. Under Uthman he replaced Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas over Kufa and led campaigns into Azerbaijan, sending reinforcements to Armenia. 1 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 358, 387 — Najeebabadi — al-Walid governor of Jazira and later Kufa.
The Lashing for Drink
In 30 AH witnesses testified before Uthman that he had drunk wine. Uthman ordered the prescribed lashing; Abdullah ibn Ja’far administered it, and Ali halted it at forty, citing Abu Bakr’s precedent. Al-Walid was deposed and Sa’id ibn al-As was sent to Kufa in his place. 2 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 395–396 — Najeebabadi — al-Walid lashed for drink; Ali halts at forty per Abu Bakr's precedent; he is deposed.
