Daughter of the Prophet ﷺ
Umm Kulthum was a daughter of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadija. She was first married to Utayba ibn Abi Lahab, who divorced her — before they lived together — when his father ordered it after the revelation of Surah al-Lahab; Utayba then spoke insolently to the Prophet ﷺ, who prayed against him, and he later met a terrible end. 1 Stories of the Sahabah · pp. 261 — Zakariyya Kandhlawi — Umm Kulthum divorced by Utayba ibn Abi Lahab after Surah al-Lahab; Utayba's insolence and the Prophet's curse.
Marriage to Uthman — the Two Lights
After her sister Ruqayyah died, the Prophet ﷺ gave Umm Kulthum in marriage to Uthman ibn Affan in Rabi al-Awwal 3 AH — and because Uthman was thus the husband of two daughters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in turn, he was honoured as Dhun-Nurayn, “the possessor of two lights.” She died in Sha’ban 9 AH without children, and the Prophet ﷺ remarked that had he a hundred daughters he would have given them to Uthman one after another. 2 Stories of the Sahabah · pp. 261–262 — Zakariyya Kandhlawi — Umm Kulthum married to Uthman after Ruqayyah's death (Rabi al-Awwal 3 AH); her death in Sha'ban 9 AH; the Prophet's words about Uthman.
