A Kinship That Is Not Severed
Umm Kulthum was the daughter of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Fatima bint Muhammad ﷺ — granddaughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Umar ibn al-Khattab sought her hand from Ali, he did so on the strength of the Prophet’s ﷺ saying that every kinship and tie of descent is severed on the Day of Resurrection except his own kinship — and Umar wished to join himself to that family. Ali married her to him. 1 Al-Farooq · pp. — — Shibli Numani — Umar marries Umm Kulthum bint Ali on the Prophet's ﷺ saying that his kinship is not severed on the Day of Resurrection.
