A Mother to the Orphan Prophet ﷺ

Baraka — known by her kunya Umm Ayman — was an Abyssinian slave-girl in the household of Abdullah, the Prophet’s ﷺ father, and passed to the orphaned Prophet ﷺ as part of his inheritance when his father died. She accompanied his mother Amina with him to Madinah, was with Amina at her death at Abwa, and brought the child back to Makkah to his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib. 1 Seerat-e-Mustafa · Vol 1 · pp. 14, 26–27 — Idris Kandhlawi — Umm Ayman inherited as a slave; with Amina at her death; she returns the young Prophet to his grandfather.

Wife of Zayd, Mother of Usama

She lived to see the call to Islam, and the Prophet ﷺ gave her in marriage to Zayd ibn Haritha — from whom was born Usama, the Prophet’s ﷺ beloved. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 2 · pp. 678 — Kandhlawi — Umm Ayman wife of Zayd ibn Haritha; mother of Usama.

After His Passing

When the Prophet ﷺ died, Umm Ayman wept inconsolably, and Abu Bakr and Umar came to comfort her with the thought that what was with Allah was better for His Messenger ﷺ. She answered: “What makes me weep is that revelation has now been cut off from us. 3 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 2 · pp. 364 — Kandhlawi — Umm Ayman weeps not for the Prophet's passing but for the cutting off of revelation.
