Champion of the Duel at Badr

Ubayda ibn al-Harith was a cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, of Banu al-Muttalib, and one of the three Muslim champions who stepped forward in the opening duel at Badr — Hamza facing Shayba, Ali facing al-Walid, and Ubayda facing Utba ibn Rabi’a. 1 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 160 — Najeebabadi — the three Muslim champions at Badr: Hamza, Ali, and Ubayda ibn al-Harith. In the exchange Ubayda struck Utba a disabling blow, but Utba’s sword severed Ubayda’s leg; Hamza and Ali then finished Utba and carried the wounded Ubayda back to the Prophet ﷺ. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 501 — Kandhlawi — Ubayda and Utba exchange blows; Ubayda's leg is severed; Hamza and Ali finish Utba and carry Ubayda to the Prophet.

‘Am I Not a Martyr?’

Mortally wounded, Ubayda asked the Prophet ﷺ, “Am I not a martyr?” and was answered, “Certainly — and I am a witness to it.” He died of the wound at al-Safra on the return from Badr, among its first martyrs, and the Prophet ﷺ laid him in the grave. 3 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 501 — Kandhlawi — the dying Ubayda asks 'Am I not a martyr?' and the Prophet affirms it and witnesses to it; his death at al-Safra.
