The Plunge into the Tigris
At the conquest of Mada’in the Muslim army stood at the bank of the Tigris in flood, unwilling to cross. Hujr ibn Adi of Banu Kinda cried out: “What stops you? Is it this little droplet?” — and reciting “Souls do not die except by Allah’s permission” (Aal Imran 145), he plunged his horse into the river. The others followed, and the Persians, seeing them ride the flood, cried “Madmen!” and fled. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 607 — Kandhlawi — Hujr plunges into the Tigris with his horse at Mada'in; the army follows; the Persians flee.
A Cloud in Captivity
Years later, held captive by Mu’awiya’s men, he asked his guard for water for ghusl rather than his drinking-share. The guard refused, fearing he would die of thirst the next day — and Hujr made du’a, and a cloud rained over him with all the water he needed. His companions asked him to pray for their freedom; he prayed instead: “O Allah, choose for us what is best.” He and his companions were martyred at Marj Adhra. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 3 · pp. 615 — Kandhlawi — Hujr's du'a brings rain to him in captivity; he asks Allah for what is best; he and his companions are martyred.
