Three Losses on a Single Day
On the return from Uhud, Hamna was told first of the martyrdom of her uncle Hamza — she said “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.” Then of her brother Abdullah ibn Jahsh — again “Inna lillahi…” Then of the martyrdom of her husband Mus’ab ibn Umayr — and “she burst into tears.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “A woman loves her husband most of all.” 1 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 178 — Najeebabadi — Hamna at Uhud and the Prophet's ﷺ saying.
The Slander of Aisha
Aisha herself narrated: “Hamna bint Jahsh was involved because her sister Zaynab bint Jahsh was a wife of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and from all the other wives of his, she was the only one who was of any competition to me. Since Allah protected Zaynab because of her piety, she had only good words to say. On the other hand, Hamna passed around plenty of slander to spite me for the sake of her sister.” 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 563 — Kandhlawi — Aisha's account of Hamna in the slander incident.
When the truth was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ “instructed that Mistah ibn Uthatha, Hassan ibn Thabit and Hamna bint Jahsh be lashed according to the prescribed penalty because of the part they played in spreading the accusation.” 3 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 565 — Kandhlawi — the prescribed lashing administered to Mistah, Hassan and Hamna.
