The Death-Pledge at Yarmuk

At Yarmuk, Ikrima ibn Abi Jahl stood and asked, “Who will pledge to fight to their deaths?” His uncle Harith ibn Hisham, Dirar ibn al-Azwar, and four hundred other prominent Muslims and horsemen took the pledge at his hand. They then fought in front of Khalid’s tent until their wounds incapacitated all of them. “A large number of them were martyred. Among those martyred was Dirar ibn al-Azwar.” (Another narration says he survived.) 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 520–521 — Kandhlawi — Dirar among the 400 of Ikrima's pledge at Yarmuk.

Persia, Syria, the Wars of Apostasy

He was “sent to punish [Tulayhah] but the task was not completed because he hurried back to Madinah on hearing the sad news of the demise of the Prophet ﷺ.” 3 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 284 — Najeebabadi — Dirar sent against Tulayhah; returns on the Prophet's ﷺ demise. After the conquest of Hira, Khalid “sent Dirar ibn al-Azwar, Dirar ibn al-Khattab, Qa’qa’ ibn Amr, Muthanna ibn Haritha and Uyaina ibn Ash-Shamas at the head of small columns to make the surrounding tribes and settlers accept either the jizya or Islam.” 4 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 302 — Najeebabadi — Dirar among Khalid's small-column commanders after the conquest of Hira. At the Battle of Fihl, “Dirar ibn Azwar was given charge of the cavalry and Iyad ibn Ghanam that of the infantry.” 5 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 327 — Najeebabadi — Dirar commands the cavalry at the Battle of Fihl.
