A Shrewd Companion of Thaqif
al-Mughira ibn Shu’ba was of Thaqif of Ta’if, a man of legendary shrewdness. When he came to accept Islam bringing wealth taken wrongfully from slain companions, the Prophet ﷺ accepted his Islam but refused the goods, for they were unlawfully gained. 1 Seerat-e-Mustafa · Vol 1 · pp. 400–401 — Idris Kandhlawi — al-Mughira accepts Islam; the Prophet refuses the unlawfully-acquired goods.
Guard, Envoy, and Governor
At Hudaybiyya he stood armed behind the Prophet ﷺ, rapping the hand of the Quraysh envoy Urwa whenever he reached for the Prophet’s ﷺ beard. After Tabuk he was sent to demolish the idol al-Lat at Ta’if. At Qadisiyya he went as envoy before the Persian commander Rustam, unmoved by threat or temptation. And he governed Kufa and Basra with a statesman’s skill. 2 History of Islam · Vol 1 · pp. 203, 343, 385 — Najeebabadi — al-Mughira at Hudaybiyya; the demolition of al-Lat; envoy to Rustam; governor of Kufa. He died at Kufa.
