The Trial of Hudaybiyya
Abu Jandal was the son of Suhayl ibn Amr, the Quraysh negotiator. Tortured by the Quraysh for his Islam, he broke free and stumbled into the Muslim camp in chains just as the treaty of Hudaybiyya was being written. His father insisted he be the first returned under its terms; the Prophet ﷺ asked that he be spared, but the Quraysh refused, and Abu Jandal cried out, “Am I to be returned to the idolaters when I have come a Muslim?” — a scene that anguished the Companions. The Prophet ﷺ counselled him to be patient, for Allah would make a way for him. 1 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 172–173 — Kandhlawi — Abu Jandal comes in chains at Hudaybiyya and is returned under the treaty; the Prophet counsels patience.
Freedom at Last
He later escaped again and joined the band of Abu Basir on the coast, who harried the Quraysh caravans until the Quraysh themselves begged the Prophet ﷺ to take the group into Madinah — and so Abu Jandal came home to the Muslims. 2 Hayatus Sahaba · Vol 1 · pp. 174–175 — Kandhlawi — Abu Jandal escapes, joins Abu Basir's band, and finally comes to Madinah.
